Kids before dollars

Marbyrnong City Council plans to privatise the Bulldogs Community Children’s Centre, seeking to remove the “requirement for a ‘not for profit’ provider” in the lease arrangements. The community is opposing this, with a decision expected after a minimum period of 28 days of consultation (from June 17).

There has been a long term trend of local government divesting from childcare ownership and accelerating the shift towards private providers, including for-profit centres. Like so many public services of the past, childcare has become a money spinner for ASX-listed companies and private equity. Of course to make money requires low wages, minimal investment in training and professional development, and a “tick a box” attitude to government regulations.
