Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) is a powerful approach to community development focusing on discovering and mobilizing the strengths and assets already present in a community.
This interactive workshop will equip participants with tools, stories, and strategies to support resident-led work, and build stronger, more connected neighbourhoods.
Grounded in real-life practice from councils across Australia and the world, participants will explore how ABCD can transform the role of local government. Together, we will:
- Practice hosting conversations to elevate local voices.
- Map and mobilise community assets.
- Explore ways to support connectors and leaders.
- Reflect on “letting go” and building trust.
This workshop is for local government staff and community practitioners who are interested in strengthening their role in community-led change.
Specifically, it’s designed for:
- Council staff working in community development, engagement, placemaking, or social planning
- Community workers and facilitators involved in neighbourhood initiatives
- Teams seeking to shift from service delivery to enabling and supporting local leadership
- Practitioners wanting practical tools and stories to apply ABCD in their context
- Anyone interested in fostering stronger, more connected, and resilient communities through strengths-based approaches
The workshop supports a mindset shift; from “doing for” to “doing with” and is ideal for those ready to explore how to walk alongside residents, rather than lead from the front.
We’re very proud to be partnering with Borderlands to present this workshop.

Lee Griffiths – I have a passion for community and always have, this is why I do the work I do, facilitating ABDC training, workshops and strategic planning. I have spent the last 14 years working in local government and the not for profit sector creating the conditions for government and organisations to walk along side community to strengthen outcomes across Australia and the UK. From my grassroots roots voluntary work to my previous leadership positions, the golden thread has always build on recognising the strengths, assets and opportunities communities already have to bring about the change they want.
